Personal trainer cost
According to Thumbtack, the national average personal trainer cost is $40.00 – $50.00 per session. (Based on quotes from Thumbtack pros. Updated February 1st, 2017.)
What can affect the price? There are a number of things that can raise or lower that price. Here are a few factors to take into account.
1-on-1 vs. group training
The fact is that 1-on-1 personal training is more expensive than training a group. In a group session, each person does not get as much individual attention from a trainer. The group also does not get to benefit from an individualized training plan.
As an example, at the Knoxville Y, personal training starts at $50 for an individual session. Group rates start at $25 per person per session. (Minimum 6 sessions.)
Trainer specialization and experience
Another thing that can affect personal trainer cost are their certifications and experience. How much education they have taken advantage of, special training or degrees can all come factor into the cost. This can especially be true if you have very specific goals or types of training he/she is working with you on.
Pay-as-you-go or packages
When you are scheduling your personal training sessions, be aware that one-off training sessions are more expensive than packages. By purchasing multiple sessions over a few months, you can typically take advantage of a discount on the session price.
For example, at The Y in Knoxville, a single individual training session is $50. But, purchasing 6 make each session $38.33 each.
Typically, the larger the city or area you live in, the more expensive personal trainers will be. That, and their location in the city can factor into the cost. In New York you could expect to pay $100 or more per hour. Whereas, in a smaller city, you might pay half that.
How long are sessions?
Most personal trainers charge by the session and set a schedule with you to have recurring sessions, such as every few days or each week. Typically, sessions are in 30-minute increments (30, 60 or 90 minutes). How long the sessions are will affect the cost.
For example, at the Knoxville Y, our personal trainers commonly schedule 60-minute sessions.
