The YMCA Community Giving Garden July 2019 Activities
Monday, July 15, 2019 – Tomato 9-1-1
Join us at 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM in studio B at the Davis Y for a Garden Talk:
Do you love home grown tomatoes? And who, having grown them at home, hasn’t had some problems? We plant them in early spring with great hopes and watch amazed as they come roaring out of the ground, soon to be covered with gorgeous yellow flowers and the first flush of yummy looking fruits. But by mid-summer we start to see problems rearing their ugly heads: leaves and turning yellow, weird spots and cracks on the fruits, bugs chomping away… what’s a gardener to do? Well, you can attend a talk by Master Gardener, Joe Pardue, who will discuss a variety of solutions for kicking problems to the curb and growing brag worthy tomatoes.
Saturday, July 20, 2019 – Garden Workday
Join us at 8:00 AM until 11:00 AM in the Community Giving Garden at the Davis Y
Come help us maintain the garden. We may be starting seeds for Fall Crops! There is always plenty to do for a variety of skill levels. Our workdays are suitable for families and all ages. Sign up at the front desk or let Martha or Ellen know or just show up! We like to teach as we work; so, this is also a good opportunity to learn about gardening and our garden. We donate all produce to local food pantries.
Share the Spare!
It’s that time of year where your garden may be running over with tomatoes, beans, zucchini and okra. If your baskets are overflowing, your neighbors and friends are hiding when you approach with a basket of fresh produce, please consider donating your produce to the Davis Y Community Garden effort. If you bring your excess harvest to the Davis Y, we will deliver it to the food pantry along with our garden produce. There is never enough fresh produce at the food pantries and they are grateful for our donations.
To the many that have helped with our garden this year. We appreciate the egg cartons, the empty water jugs, the compost donations and those that volunteer in the garden or help with our deliveries. We could not accomplish as much without your help. Together, we can do so much more!
