I knew something had to give. I was overweight, I didn’t exercise and my doctor told me I would most likely develop diabetes if something didn’t change. Fortunately I joined a program that helped me make healthier choices like eating better and being more active. The group experience was really inspiring. We dealt with challenges many of us were facing and shared ideas on how to overcome them. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program was like a wake-up call that really changed my life.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if current trends continue, one in three Americans could have diabetes by the year 2050. The Y’s 12 month lifestyle modification program is part of the C-D-C’s National Diabetes Prevention Program. The goal is to prevent the onset of Type 2 Diabetes by reducing body weight by 7% and participating in 150 minutes of physical activity per week.
