My name is Sabrina, and I am 53. I would like to tell you a little bit about myself and the YMCA. I have lost weight before, but losing what I wanted to this time meant I will need to exercise. I do no like to exercise – I can barely walk – why would I want to exercise? It doesn’t matter, I would end up quitting anyway. Well, I thought I would try the Y. I would sign up for a couple months, gve it a shot then probably just stop going as I have done at the other places. I have belonged to exercise facilities before – they act like they care, get your money, and forget about you. So I signed up for three months at the YMCA on Winston Road.
That was one of the best things I have ever done. They were nice to me before I joined and they have been nice to me every day since. They are excited when you reach a goal you have set for yourself. I enjoy swimming the most. You can swim by yourself or you can participate in a group swim. You can go to a group swim that best fits your ability and the shape you are in. They don’t criticize you when you can’t do something. They help you figure out what’s best for each person. They ask how I am doing – anything they can do to help me. Everyone cares – from the top manager, the pool managers, the lifeguards, to the front desk employees – everyone. Everyone seems to enjoy being there – it is fun.
I have told you about the Y and a little about myself, but one of the most important things is, I no longer use my wheelchair-walker or cane. I can walk and I can actually run. I can do this because I joined the Y. I joined in August of 2012 and it is now December 2012 and I have lost 68 pounds. I have tried before to lose this weight, but I have always given up. Exercise was just too hard. But not at the Y – they work with you at your level of fitness. I never thought I would still be here. But I have friends here now….It is a wonderful place to be – it has changed my life forever. And it is fun, I look forward to going. The Y has changed my life forever.
